EDF Energy launches Stage 2 of its consultation on new nuclear build at Hinkley Point
25 June 2010EDF Energy is to hold a series of public exhibitions as part of its Stage 2 consultation on proposals to build a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in Somerset.
The energy company will be publishing its ‘Preferred Proposals’ for the development of Hinkley Point C new nuclear power station. The consultation will last for twelve weeks from 9 July to 4 October 2010.
During this period, EDF Energy will be seeking the views of people living in the vicinity of Hinkley Point and the surrounding communities.
The proposals for the site and associated developments will respond to comments following the Stage 1 public consultation on ‘Initial Proposals and Options’ held last winter.*
The aim of the public exhibitions is to provide the public with more information about the project and to help people understand and comment on the proposals. Members of the EDF Energy project team will be on hand to answer questions.

Richard Mayson, EDF Energy’s Director of Planning and External Affairs for Nuclear New Build said: “We have very carefully reviewed all of the comments following Stage 1 of our public consultation. I would encourage local residents to come along to our second round of public exhibitions to see how our plans have been adapted, to ask questions of our project team and to provide feedback on our proposals.”

Our plans have moved on and are now more detailed so I do hope our neighbours will take part again and share their views with us.”
Two new generating units at Hinkley Point C would be capable of supplying enough electricity for around five million homes and at the peak of construction provide around 5,000 jobs on-site and more in the supply chain. Once operational, the new power station would support around 900 permanent jobs on site as well as many more jobs more widely.
Subject to the outcome of the consultations, the company plans to make its planning applications for the project this coming winter.
