Preliminary Works
To meet our goal to deliver new nuclear energy to the UK we need to undertake preliminary works on the site in advance of a decision by the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) on our Development Consent Order application.
In order for us to do this work we intend to apply to West Somerset Council and the marine authorities for permission to carry out the preliminary work, which comprises three elements:
- Erecting a temporary sea jetty to enable bulk materials to be unloaded
- Securing the site with a fence and sea wall
- Making the site ready for the main excavations by clearing vegetation, installing haul roads and utility connections and terracing the site.
The preliminary works will be done entirely at our own risk, and undertaking them will in no way prejudice the independent view that the IPC will reach on whether to grant consent for construction on a nuclear power station at Hinkley Point.
We have been consulting on our proposals since our Stage 1: Initial Proposals and Options were published in November 2009.
We recently (19 April) met with residents living closest to the site to explain our initial ideas for the preliminary works application we aim to submit to West Somerset Council later this summer.
Investigation work is progressing well. We are gaining a much better understanding of the ground conditions on site and met local residents in May and June to update them on the works taking place. Our site ecologist also answered questions in relation to how we are protecting the local wildlife whilst we undertake this essential work.
Off-Site Investigations
We have carried out archaeological investigation work across many of the search areas we identified in our Stage 1 consultation and the County Council archaeologist is fully involved in this work.
We have further investigation work to undertake which will involve drilling rigs taking soil samples to improve our understanding of the ground conditions we could come across if we take proposals forward within these search areas. We will write to residents in advance to let them know when this work is planned.
