EDF Energy has nominated an area of land surrounding the existing Hinkley Point nuclear power stations for the development of new nuclear power. The development will be known as Hinkley Point C.
Hinkley Point is situated on the Severn Estuary approximately five miles from Bridgwater and the M5 to the south, 15 miles from Minehead in the west and roughly six miles from Burnham-on-Sea.
The aerial photograph on this page shows the full extent of the land that has been nominated which is a combination of land previously controlled separately by EDF and British Energy. A revised site outline of the development site, based on the nominated site area, will be produced in the consultation.
Not all of this land will be required for the development of a new nuclear power station with two generating units, and not all of it will necessarily be needed during the construction period. Land used during the construction process would be reinstated afterwards.
Detailed feasibility and design work is currently underway to determine the precise location of the power station and associated buildings. This work will also determine the boundaries for the land needed for the construction period.
Parts of the site are also criss-crossed by public footpaths and bridleways that are still in use during the initial feasibility work.

We are now undertaking pre-application public consultation required by the Planning Act 2008 for nationally significant infrastructure projects and are seeking the views of the public and local communities on:
- Proposals for the main power station development at Hinkley Point
- Associated development that we believe is necessary to support the construction and operation of the power station
- Dealing with the impacts on, and potential benefits for, the local community
- Preliminary site works.

The principle of whether there should be a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point will be decided through the Government's draft National Policy Statement for nuclear power.
The safety and security of the European Pressurised Water Reactor (EPR) we are proposing to build at Hinkley Point ‘C' will be considered under the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process, undertaken jointly by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and the Environment Agency (EA), and by the nuclear site licensing process.
